Creative Bee Collective logo

Creative Bee Collective is a freelance partnership between Ron Clark & myself. It is mostly for computer repair & tutoring which is handled by Ron. Any design work would come my way. We have a page on Facebook that has all our information. I first drew out the logo in my sketchpad. The bee's body is actually a B, & the antennae are C's. I then pulled it into Illustrator & played with different line sizes. It's a simple & creative logo that incorporates our idea of simple, yet effective which is what we are about. We wanted something a little more than the average computer repair logo, with room to grow into other areas.

David Carson style album release poster

I read a few interviews & spent some hours looking at David Carson's work before I started this project for History of Graphic Design. He said two things that stuck with me "If I take a roll and get back two that are any good, that's a pretty high percentage." & something to the effect of that he places type until it feels right, he feels the project. I tried to incorporate that into this design. I used a picture I took of chicken boiling in the pot while shaking the camera slightly to give it a more out of focus feel. I also used the photo as is, much like Carson's photography. He doesn't touch up his photos. I also played with different typefaces, both serif & sans serif until it felt right to me. I used one of my favorite albums "God Fodder" by Ned's Atomic Dustbin. They rock.

Art Nouveau poster

This project is for History of Graphic Design. I chose to do Art Nouveau style. The concept was to take the concepts of that style & make a poster ad for any museum of our choosing. The museum I chose was Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive since they show silent films. My inspiration for this was Alphonse Mucha, Aubrey Beardsley, & Gloria Swanson (I modeled the woman after a picture that I've included to see how it influenced). I printed on a light colored paper to match the color scheme. I've added a colored background as to not have it displayed on white.

Abduzeedo posted a Roy Lichtenstein Style tutorial that I went through using a picture I took of my son. I followed the tutorial for the most part, but went off in my own direction as far as textures & the color halftone.

In the Orchard by Tiger Army poster for AIGA's Always Summer poster show

One of my favorite bands is Tiger Army, so I made this poster based upon the song for AIGA's Always Summer poster show. I liked how it turned out & I got a good response from the poster at the gallery showing. Will also be on display for October's Art Walk downtown.

My Best Friend's Birthday E-Vite

I'm a little low on funding this week & it's my best friends birthday. I decided my present right now would be dd'ing for him & this birthday E-Vite. I made the illustration & used a bokeh free for personal use stock photo for the background. He loved it.

Buttons for my upcoming website

I LOOOOVE classic film. The movie stars, the storylines, the acting, everything. A website is an extension of your personality. The buttons were inspired by movie theatre marquees. Going with a color scheme of aqua, dark red, white, black, & gray. I wanted cute design with simplicity.

Work in progress: Typeface - Block It To Ya

This started out as a bored drawing on scratch paper at work, then I realized that I was on to something. I researched to see if there was a typeface too similar. I haven't found one, so I decided to make a finish product. This is what I've got so far. It's made in Illustrator using the pen tool & a grid. Tried to make it as simple as possible. I have to pull it into a program to make it a complete typeface. I am still working on the lowercase letters.

Reproduction silent movie title card

This was made for Norman Silent Film Studios. We have entered a contest trying to raise money & interest for this great Jacksonville landmark. You have to submit a photo holding a sign that says "This Place Matters". We added a little flair to it, created by yours truly. I have a passion for remembering our past, especially architecture & film. Made using both Illustrator & Photoshop.

Ads for my sisters cheerleading program

My mom asked me to do an ad for a church & a daycare in her town. She was selling ad space in the high school football program (my sister is a cheerleader). The church had 3 requests: colors used must be a darker blue & gold, must have some sort of eagle watermark type background, must do 3 different ones for them to choose. The 2nd one was chosen. The main challenge was following the guidelines. Tiny Tots already had an ad for theirs but it needed some improvement & didn't transfer well. I created this new one, keeping with their primary / rainbow color scheme.

Various School Projects

We were given various projects based on the History of Graphic Design. One is this Printers Mark. I chose sunflowers because they're my favorite flowers & they always look so happy, a phonograph because I collect them & 78 RPM records, & a film canister since I have an obsession with classic film (mostly pre-code Hollywood films). My initials are on the phonograph in the same typeface I use for my branding.


My favorite professor gave us this assignment the second semester I was there. I had never used a design program in my life & went through all the learning / growing pains with this assignment. The only thing I've done to this is crop the photograph correctly. It is a creative commons licensed photo that I used, just added the saturation effects & cropped it. I still like looking at this assignment & the book is lovely too. One Hundred Years in Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The 2nd book is Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I used scans of fabric & my hair in a braid for the cover, then illustrated over it after adding some textures.
